How can I listen to Spotify while traveling internationally?

Note: Hotspot Shield Basic allows you to connect to virtual locations in the U.S. only. Upgrade to Hotspot Shield Premium to connect to virtual locations around the world.

You can listen to your favorite music as much as you want internationally with Spotify Premium, but the free version of Spotify limits international listening to 14 days.

If you’re traveling abroad and you want to use the free version of Spotify while you’re away, or you simply want privacy and security on your device while you use Spotify, turn Hotspot Shield VPN on before you start listening.

As long as you connect to Hotspot Shield VPN and choose the country where your Spotify account is registered, you should be able to stream Spotify.

Read below for more specific instructions about how to stream Spotify internationally with Hotspot Shield VPN.

Step 1: Sign in to Hotspot Shield Premium, and turn the VPN on

Please verify the following information:

I have a Hotspot Shield Premium subscription

  1. Access to premium streaming services is a Hotspot Shield Premium feature. Make sure you’re subscribed and logged in so that you can select different server locations. If you don’t have a Premium account, subscribe here.
  2. I’m signed in to my Premium account
Check if you’re signed in to your Premium account. To do this, open the app, select the hamburger menu near the top left corner of the screen Hamburger.png and select “Account.”
  3. Hotspot Shield is turned on
To ensure that Hotspot Shield VPN is on and running in the background, you’ll see the timer counting upward from within the connect button, and you’ll be able to view and change server locations.

Step 2: Ensure that you’re connected to the correct virtual location

If you can say “yes” to at least option 3 above, but you’re still having trouble streaming Spotify with your VPN, follow the instructions below:

  1. Ensure that you’re connected to Hotspot Shield VPN servers in the US by selecting the dropdown menu on the right-hand side of “Server location:” and choosing the country your Spotify account is registered. For example, if your Spotify account is registered in the U.S. choose “United States,” or any available U.S city:
