HSS 3.0 Settings Explained (Android)

We have added a number of new changes to our version 3.0. In order to access settings described below, tap on the Shield Icon in the upper left corner and tap on the "Settings" button. You will be presented with THREE settings options; below is the break down for each one of them.

For user convenience, all of the settings are explained in this article. There is much information to read over and we advise to use anchors to navigate through this page to the sections of interest.

1. General Settings:

2. Selected Sites:

3. Hotspots & Networks:

1. General Settings

  • Start On Boot: This feature is designed to start the HSS process when your device finishes booting up. This does not mean that HSS will automatically connect when your device is booted up. HSS will not automatically connect due to Android protocols that require user to trust the application before it can take action.

  • Turn off VPN while Sleep: This setting lets you keep the VPN On or Off during the sleep mode. If you would like to preserve your battery life, it is best to turn off VPN while in a Sleep Mode. If you do not wish for any type of data to leak while your phone is in Sleep Mode, you should leave VPN turned on while in Sleep Mode.

2. Selected Sites

  • Virtual Locations: In version 3.0, we have 3 Virtual Locations available for users to choose from: USA, UK, and Japan. Each of those Virtual Locations has its own Default Domains, for example UK has BBC and USA has Hulu. However, some common domains also exist that are shared between all of the location, Google.com for example.
  • Default Domains: If you choose "Selected Sites" Protection Mode, those are the domains that will be protected. Users have an option to add custom domains to the list (For more about this, see next bullet point) as well as the option to turn the protection On and Off for specific Default Domains. Unfortunately, at this time, protection can only be turned On and Off only for Default Domains. If you want to turn Off protection for Custom Domains, you will need to remove that domain from the list.

  • Adding Domains: Before you add a domain, make sure you have the proper Virtual Location selected. For example, if you want to access BT Sports (UK Website), you need to select UK virtual location prior to adding the domain. To add a domain you tap on "ADD DOMAIN HERE" and enter the domain name, for example: "example.com" and tap "Done".

  • Removing Domains: Select the Virtual Location that contains your custom domain and tap on the X right next to it to remove it. Once you tap the X, domain will be removed immediately.
  • Turning Protection On/Off per Domain: Remember that you can only turn protection On or Off for Default Domains. All you need to do is hit the Switch right next to a Default Domain and the protection will be turned off or vice versa.

3. Hotspots & Network Settings

  • Smart Mode Settings: Smart Mode is a new feature that was introduced in v3.0. Smart Mode uses preset logic to determine which type of protection to use depending on the security of the network. In the settings below you can change those presets to fit your needs. For more detailed description of the Smart Mode, Selected Sites Mode and Full Protection Mode, click here.
    • Unsafe WiFi Hotspots: WiFi Networks that use WEP encryption or are NOT password protected, considered to be Unsafe Networks. When connecting to those networks in Smart Mode, the App will activate Full Protection (By Default), which will encrypt and secure all of your traffic. If you would like to change this, tap the "Unsafe WiFi Hotspots" and select alternative protection option (Full, Selected Sites, or OFF).
    • Safe WiFi Hotspots: WiFi Networks that do NOT use WEP encryption and are password protected, considered to be Safe Networks. When connecting to those networks in Smart Mode, the App will activate Selected Sites Protection (By Default), which will encrypt and secure only those domains listed in Selected Sites. If you would like to change this, tap the "Safe WiFi Hotspots" and select alternative protection option (Full, Selected Sites, or OFF).
    • Mobile Networks: Mobile or Cellular Networks are those provided by your cell phone carrier. When connecting to those networks in Smart Mode, the App will activate Selected Sites Protection (By Default), which will encrypt and secure only those domains listed in Selected Sites. If you would like to change this, tap the "Mobile Networks" and select alternative protection option (Full, Selected Sites, or OFF).
    • Other Networks: If a network does not match any of the above criteria, it will be classified as Other Network. When connecting to those networks in Smart Mode, the App will activate Full Protection (By Default), which will encrypt and secure all of your traffic. If you would like to change this, tap the "Other Networks" and select alternative protection option (Full, Selected Sites, or OFF).
  • Custom Networks: Every time you connect to a network, it will be logged into Custom Networks. You have the ability to configure setting per network. For example, if you go to your friend's house and his network is WPA2 encrypted with a strong password but you, for what ever reason, want to have Full Protection on that specific network, you can select his network from the list of custom networks and select Full Protection, just for that network. At this point, every time you connect to his network, the application will automatically apply those settings.
