*Note: These instructions only apply if you downloaded Hotspot Shield from here. These instructions do not apply to the version of Hotspot Shield VPN downloaded from the Microsoft Store.
If you’re trying to connect to Hotspot Shield and receive this error message: “Something went wrong,” follow the steps below:
1. Check for Software Conflicts
The most common cause is a conflict with other network-related software.
- Disable Other VPNs: Turn off or temporarily uninstall any other VPN services you may have on your computer.
- Check Firewall/Antivirus: Temporarily disable your third-party antivirus program and firewall (or add an exception for Hotspot Shield). If the VPN connects after disabling them, you will need to add an exception for Hotspot Shield in that security software.
2. Restart the Hotspot Shield Service (Windows)
This step ensures the core VPN process is running correctly.
- Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll down and find the Hotspot Shield Service (or similar name like hshld).
- Right-click on the service and select Restart. If the status shows "Stopped," select Start.
- Launch Hotspot Shield again.
3. End Conflicting Processes (Windows)
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
- Go to the Details tab (or Processes tab on older Windows versions).
- Look for any process named Hotspot Shield or cmw_srv.exe.
- Right-click on the process and select End task or End process.
- Try relaunching Hotspot Shield.
4. Reinstall the Application
If the above steps fail, a clean reinstall is necessary.
- Uninstall Hotspot Shield completely from your computer (via Settings > Apps or Control Panel).
- Restart your computer.
- Download and reinstall the latest version of Hotspot Shield from the official website.
iOS & Android (Mobile)
If you are using an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, follow these mobile-specific steps.
1. Reinstall the VPN Profile (iOS/iPhone)
An outdated or corrupted VPN profile is a frequent cause of the "System Error" on iOS.
- Open the Hotspot Shield app.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Re-install VPN Profile (or Re-install Profile).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install the new profile.
- Try turning Hotspot Shield on again.
2. Clear App Data/Cache (Android)
- Go to your device's Settings.
- Navigate to Apps or Applications & Notifications.
- Find and tap on the Hotspot Shield app.
- Tap Storage.
- Select Clear Cache and then Clear Data (Note: Clearing data will sign you out).
- Reboot your device and launch Hotspot Shield to sign back in.
3. Check for Common Network Issues (All Devices)
- Check Internet Connection: Make sure you have a stable, reliable internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
- Toggle Airplane Mode: Turn Airplane Mode ON for a few seconds, then turn it OFF. This resets your network adapters.
- Switch Networks: If you are on Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data (or vice versa) and try connecting. This helps determine if your current network is blocking the VPN.
- Update the App: Ensure you have the absolute latest version of the Hotspot Shield app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
